You might have thought that what if an asteroid hits our earth? Yes, this is a major threat for us. Last asteroid strike on earth was 66 Million years ago! Which ended the dinosaurs. If an asteroid hits the earth again, then it will end humans too? Or is there any method to stop asteroids? How many asteroids are there that can hit our earth? Let’s read and try to find it out:-

Near-Earth Asteroids

The asteroids that might hit the earth in the foreseeable future, are called Near-Earth Asteroids. NASA and other space agencies are continously tracking all near earth asteroids. To compute their path and if and when they will collide with earth.

As of April 2022, more than 28,000 Near-Earth Asteroids have been identified. If which more than 800 have a diameter of 1 KM or more. This is a very scary number! So many asteroids that may potentially collide with earth.

Do we need to scare from this?

Today, we don’t need to be scared from this. Because scientific calculations are so advance that we can clearly predict their path. We can even estimate the chances of it actually colliding with earth.

And what if they are at the path of collision? At this point, can we do something?

What we can do at that time?

This was the idea behind NASA’s DART space mission launched in 2021. DART–> Double Asteroid Redirection Test. They have planned to have a spacecraft collide with an asteroid, so that the path of asteroid could be changed. This could sound like a science fiction but this idea was already successful.

In September 2022, a test was launched on an asteroid that was not the path towards Earth, NASA sent a spacecraft to it, the spacecraft collided with the asteroid and it’s path was altered. It can be done to any asteroid on the way to earth in future.
