India to be renamed as Bharat!

India is going to be renamed! There’s a lot of buzz around this, many believe that India could soon renamed as Bharat. But why all this of a sudden? Is this just a rumor or can be the reality? What are the reasons of renaming India as Bharat? What if Indiais renamed as Bharat? Let’s read and try to find it out

Is this a rumor?

No, it can’t be a rumor. Well there are two reasons for this. Number 1, is the invitation that is being sent out by President Draupdi Murmur. The invite is for the G20 dinner, but look at what it says below the national emblem. President of Bharat. It is usually said President of Republic of India but this time it says Bharat. That’s the one reason for all the buzz.

The 2nd reason is the upcoming Parliament session, the government has called a special session from September 18 to 22nd. Reports say the name change could be on the agenda.

What does the Constitution say?

The Constitution’s article 1 begins with the following sentence; ‘India, that is Bharat, is a union of states.’ Doesn’t that means that the both names are interchangeable. The legal scholars are divided on this issue, some of them point to other articles of the Constitution. Like article 77, it refers to the Government of India and not Bharat. Also article 52, which mentions the President of India and not Bharat. But some scholars disagree, they say article 1 makes it clear that the both names are the same, India & Bharat, what’s written else doesn’t matter at all.

What if India is renamed as Bharat?

Now let’s assume government has changed the name. So now government has to change whole of the articles containing the name India. The word India us part of so many institutions, laws and positions like The Supreme Court of India, The Chief Justice of India, The President of India, all of it may have to be changed. And even then there is a final test such a move likely be challenged in the Supreme Court.

In fact it already has been. In 2020 the Supreme Court was hearing a petition which wanted to drop India from the Constitution and the Court dismissed the petition by saying ‘India is already called Bharat’. Even if the government wants it, it will not be easy. There are multiple political and legal challenges to renaming the country.
